Specialist youth work project providing activity and skills programmes for young people to overcome barriers and build resilience enabling a brighter future.

Who is the service for?

The Active Skills Youth Work service provided activity and skills programmes for young people aged 11 to 14 who were based in the Bramley and Stanningley areas of Leeds. The project ran until 31 August 2024 and helped young people to overcome barriers and build resilience enabling a brighter future.

How we helped

Through 9-week programmes, we supported young people using a strengths-based approach to movement-based activities that built confidence, offered new experiences and encouraged engagement with their community.

Activities included a range of sports sessions as well as life skills to support young people to learn how to stay fit and healthy.

The project introduced young people to local community-based venues, including Bramley Baths, that they might not have accessed. At the end of the project they received a voucher to continue attending.

The team also provided one-to-one support outside of sessions to advocate on barriers and create sustainable exit plans.

Feedback from participants

Young people who accessed the Active Skills project said:

“I have never been in a gym before and now I love it.”
"The groups help me be healthier."
"I have made new friends."
